Recently, I had the privilege of participating in the documentary series Onbekend en Wereldberoemd: Gebroeders van Lymborch. In the series, journalist Sinan Can and Rijksmuseum curator Pieter Roelofs explore the story of three medieval painters from Nijmegen. Their work had a lasting influence on European art, yet remains surprisingly unknown in the Netherlands.
In the fourth and final episode, they visit my studio to look at a new work I made in response to the Van Lymborch brothers’ imagery. They reflect on how the brothers’ symbolism, craftsmanship and storytelling still inspire contemporary artists today.
The work shown in the documentary was inspired by Ontmoeting der Wijzen from the Très Riches Heures. It was created for the exhibition Ver & Nabij – gebroeders Van Lymborch x hedendaagse kunstenaars, where the piece can be seen in full. The exhibition also presents large-scale photographic prints of the Van Lymborch brothers’ miniatures alongside works by other contemporary artists.
The documentary series is broadcast by BNNVARA on NPO 2. If you would like to learn more about the Van Lymborch brothers and their amazing legacy, this series is a great place to start. A link to the programme can be found here!
